Book Review: Locke (Corps Security #5) by Harper Sloan

Darkness is the only thing I see. Ever since the day my life changed. The day that everything and everyone I held close to me ceased to exist. The day I lost it all and the demons of my past consumed my every waking moment.

I tried to keep others at arm’s length. Tried not to let my darkness taint them. Ruin them. Harm them. And whether I want to admit it or not, as much as I wish I could keep them locked out, they refuse to leave. Refuse to let me suffer alone.

If I hadn’t been so focused on keeping those demons from flying free, I wouldn’t have missed how one perfect angel was able to sneak her way under my skin—refusing to let go. Making me want things I don’t deserve.

She consumes me. Her beauty knows no end. The love she promises tempts me every time she’s near. But that pure heart that makes her MY Emmy is the one thing I’m convinced I’ll destroy if I ever let her close.

I’m a broken man. A broken man with too much darkness in his soul to ever let her light shine upon me. But even that doesn’t stop me from craving her with every single breath in my body.

**This is the final book in the Corps Security series. This book is not suitable for younger readers. There is strong language, adult situations, and some violence.*

Review

Locke, the fifth and final book in the Corps Security series is probably my favorite. I’ll be honest when Harper Sloan released Axel I was hooked, I never imagined the book I’d fallen in love with would become a series of 5 books that I’d ultimately swoon over. My curiosity about Maddox Locke only grew with each book release…something about him just made me want to know more. I’ll admit all the books in the series at some point brought me to tears and I just want to reiterate as I do whenever I mention the waterworks that this is no easy task. I can only name a handful of authors that have successfully brought my emotionless ass to tears. I don’t know that I would recommend reading these books as a standalone because I feel like you need to experience all their journeys in order to fully appreciate each book individually. You need to see what each person has endured and how each character plays a role in their happiness. I urge you to read this series in order! If you have never read any of the Corps Security books…shame on you go on and buy them now. If you’re with me and have read all or close to all then you can agree Harper knows how to write one hell of a book. This is, as with most of my reviews spoiler free.

Maddox Locke has lived with some demons, his scars run deep. He is shackled by the chains of his past and pulled himself so far down he doesn’t know how to get back up. He’s managed to deal with his pain by never allows anyone completely in. He’s become an expert at hiding his emotions. The only person who has ever been able to slightly scratch the surface is Emmy. Something about beautiful, sweet Emmy touches him deep to his soul. He cares for her deeply, but Maddox refuses to acknowledge or act on his feelings. They have an intense connection and longstanding history. Emmy’s patience and undying loyalty to Locke is admirable, but even I got frustrated for her. How much rejection can one person take before it’s just too much. I don’t want to spoil any of the books for you so I’ll just say this one picks up close to where we left off, but also delves into Locke and Emmy’s past so we get to understand their upbringing and their struggles. Emmy went through so much and she is one tough as nails chick. She’s probably my absolute favorite alpha chick. She’s pretty bad ass.
Locke’s story is one that will cut deep and break your heart, but Emmy’s story is one you’d never imagine. These two have both suffered. They’ve endured pain, loss and betrayal like you wouldn’t believe. Harper Sloan has a way of shocking you, touching you and making you whole all in the same chapter. Her stories are raw, intense, passion filled and deeply personal. The family she’s created through the corps security series is one that makes you wish you had the kind of support these characters provide one another. They are a family and although they have all gone through their share of struggles they are always there for each other through the good, bad and ugly.

Locke has kept everyone at an arms length for as long as we’ve known him. Briefly we get a glimpse of some emotion, but those moments have been few and far between. We know how much he cares whenever we hear his brief, but powerful advice. He’s unknowingly been a rock to everyone around him and getting to hear his story is one that will touch you and make you hope beyond hope that these two finally gets their happily ever after. This book is incredible. I loved every minute of it, there are some pretty fucked up moments, but overall everything they endure makes their bond stronger and this book and the series is well worth the read.

I don’t really know how else to say this is an awesome book without giving much away so I’ll just say this is an awesome book and a great conclusion to the series. The best thing about it is Harper has opened the way for a couple more stories to be told in what I’m hoping may be a new series or a few novellas in the works? At least I’m hoping that is the case haha…either way, these books have weaved their way into my heart and will forever have a place there.

I’d highly recommend this book and the series to any Contemporary Romance/Military Romance fans.

About the Author:
Harper lives in small town Georgia just a short drive from her hometown of Peachtree City. She (and her 3 daughters) enjoy ruling the house they dubbed ‘Estrogen Ocean’, much to her husbands chagrin. Harper has a borderline unhealthy obsession with books; you can almost ALWAYS find her with her eReader attached. She enjoys bad reality TV and cheesy romantic flicks. Her favorite kind of hero–the super alpha kind!
Harper started using writing as a way to unwind when the house went to sleep at night; and with a house full of crazy it was the perfect way to just relax. It didn’t take long before a head full of very demanding alphas would stop at nothing to have their story told.
