Review

*This was an ARC provided to me for free in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and comments are my own.*

I am never disappointed with anything Jessica Park produces. I definitely have to start by saying this book is a total mindfuck. I felt like I was tripping at times. It is bold and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. The storyline is original and the characters are unique. Prepare yourself to be impressed by a new side of Jessica Park.  There is an element of darkness yet something so incredibly beautiful about this novel. I spent a good portion of this read saying, “Fuck,” “Holy Shit” and “OMG.” I’m pretty sure I even had to pick my jaw up a few times, but I loved every minute of it! Actually, I couldn’t put it down. In truth, I wondered to myself a few times “WTF am I reading,” but in a,”wow did that really just happen” way. There are so many layers to this novel and I’m being my usual evil self by giving minimal information, but I do believe this is a book you just need to read and experience on your own.

I fell in love with Sam, I hurt with Stella, and I desperately tried to understand Costa. Each element of this story is like a piece of a puzzle. There is no way to really prepare for what you will experience reading Clear. It is unrestrained, unpredictable and quite frankly A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Jessica Park impresses the reader with her literary genius pushing boundaries and drawing the reader into one of the most cleverly crafted worlds I’ve ever experienced. The emotions you’ll experience while reading Clear will make you feel as though you have stepped into this book and become one of these characters. You will walk with them through every struggle, every hurt and every triumph. All the love, resentment, anger and sadness that they feel will slowly seep its way into your core forever branding you. This unforgettable, incredible story will consume you. I devoured it. Clear is erotic, intense and utterly addictive. It will mess with your mind and test your limits. It may even freak you out a bit at times, but it is sure to be a mind blowing ride. I was absolutely spellbound and I have no doubt you will be too. Fingers crossed for more Death Tripper novels!!!

This book can be classified under many genres and I can’t say that it falls under any one category, but I would highly recommended it to New Adult and Paranormal Romance fans. BTW – There is no cliffhanger, I just want more. LOL.

Book Review: Flat-Out Celeste (Flat-Out Love, #2) by Jessica Park

FLC

Synopsis

Whether you were charmed by Celeste in Flat-Out Love or are meeting her for the first time, this book is a joyous celebration of differences, about battling private wars that rage in our heads and in our hearts, and—very much so— this is a story about first love.

For high-school senior Celeste Watkins, every day is a brutal test of bravery. And Celeste is scared. Alienated because she’s too smart, her speech too affected, her social skills too far outside the norm, she seems to have no choice but to retreat into isolation.

But college could set her free, right? If she can make it through this grueling senior year, then maybe. If she can just find that one person to throw her a lifeline, then maybe, just maybe.

Justin Milano, a college sophomore with his own set of quirks, could be that person to pull her from a world of solitude. To rescue her—that is, if she’ll let him.

Together, they may work. Together, they may save each other. And together they may also save another couple—two people Celeste knows are absolutely, positively flat-out in love.

Review

Astonished, amazed, inspired… Flat-Out Celeste is a quite simply put…a masterpiece. Jessica Park has managed to make me fall in love all over again with this amazing series. She is brilliant and I am in awe. This is an absolute must-read!

Let me backtrack a bit and come clean. When I first read Flat-Out Love, book one in this extraordinary series. I wasn’t sure of my feelings. In fact, I do believe my initial reaction was, “entertaining and hilarious, but predictable.” Now wait, don’t fret, I was a moron and I’ll be the first to admit it. My ridiculous reasoning at the time is not even worth mentioning…yet as time passed I still couldn’t get this book out of my head…it took a couple of weeks for me to realize I was a complete idiot and I actually rather loved this book. So, what did I do next you ask? Well, I reread it of course.  On second glance…ok, it was a bit more than a glance…more like a thorough examining, but all I could think is, “this Jessica Park lady is brilliant.” She made me love all the characters and when Flat-Out Matt was released I was overjoyed and once again…I fell in love. The announcement of Flat-Out Celeste put me over the moon. I was elated and I didn’t even know what to expect, all I knew is I had to have it. I was captivated with Celeste’s quirky personality since Flat-Out Love. Of course I had questions, what had become of this eccentric yet brilliant girl? Had she developed better social skills? Did she make more friends? Would she fall in love? I needed answers and I needed them like yesterday!

See, Jessica Park doesn’t just draw you in with her writing, she makes you fall in love…you actually want to live in these books and know more about every single person you encounter. I fell in love and connected with Celeste from the very first book and I needed more. The wait was grueling, but when I finally had my hands on Flat-Out Celeste, I devoured EVERY…SINGLE…WORD. Celeste is highly intelligent, but she has rarely allowed emotions to rule her or get in the way of important decisions. This book highlights her struggles to fit in, her path to both finding love and self-love. Celeste’s story is one that you may relate to on different levels. She is quite unique and there are discernible differences between her and many others characters, however, at the core, her battles aren’t so very different than those that many others face. The awakening that Celeste experiences in this book is life changing. She grows, loves, learns and experiences the world in a way that makes you appreciate the struggles. And while Celeste’s story takes up a great deal of the book her story wouldn’t be complete without Matt and Julie. Woohoo…so, yeah, you’ll see their return and hopefully appreciate the way things unfold.

Flat-Out Celeste lived up to all my expectations and then some. I won’t go and repeat the synopsis or summarize the book. I want you to experience this book for all that it is. It’s an extraordinary story with a beautiful and powerful message. Celeste is a character you won’t soon forget. Her story is one that is beautiful, heartbreaking and incredibly brave. I laughed, I cried and I fell hopelessly in love…again.

I could go on and on about this book and the series, but I want you to read this through so I’ll end by saying this book is beyond my greatest expectations. Jessica Park gives life to characters in a quirky and absolutely endearing manner rendering you speechless at times. The wit, humor and raw honesty in her writing is powerful and evocative. This book takes you on an incredible journey with a reminder that sometimes different is perfect and sometimes all you need is the perfect person to help you find your way. I give this book a gazillion stars…yeah I said it, it’s really that good! Go forth and read my friends this one is a must-read for all!

PS: I hope there will be more to the Flat-Out Love Series…I need more like now…hook me up to a Flat-Out Love IV. I fear I may not survive without it…seriously…ok maybe I won’t die…or maybe I will…why even risk it Jessica? Take me out of my misery…just say there will be more…pretty please with a cherry on top! 😉

Excerpt

There was a knock at the door and Matt leaned in, swinging a brown paper bag in her direction. “I heard Mom made stuffed peppers tonight. Last time she made those, I nearly died from flatulence. I assume she stuffed them with her usual repulsive ground chicken, quinoa, Brussels sprouts, and pomegranate seed mix?”

Just the sound of Matt’s voice made Celeste relax. She smiled at him. “Based on the smell, I believe you’re right.”

“So you didn’t eat then? I was right!” Matt flopped onto her bed and lay down, his long body scrunching up the neat white comforter that she spent ten minutes arranging before she’d gone to school this morning. “I thought I’d take a break from studying and bring you something edible.”

“It smells like a burger from Mr. Bartley’s,” she said as she got up and took a seat next to Matt. “Hand it over, thoughtful brother.”

He tightened a hand around the top of the bag. “You have to guess which kind I brought you first.”

“How am I supposed to know?”

“Close your eyes.”

She did as instructed and felt him move the bag under her nose. Sweet, spicy… a bit garlicky. “Aha! Boursin cheese and bacon! The Mark Zuckerberg burger!”

“And sweet potato fries and a bottle of iced tea, but you win. A burger named after ‘the richest geek in America,’ as the restaurant calls him.”

“You will be the richest geek in America after you finish your Ph.D. Program,” Celeste said through a mouthful of fries.

“If M.I.T. doesn’t land me in a psych unit first.”

“You only have this year left to endure. And you will hardly find yourself in need of psychiatric care, Matthew. You are doing stupendously.”

“I’m scraping by.” Matt reached into the bag and grabbed a handful of fries and opened her iced tea.

“You are not ‘scraping by.’ You are assistant teaching classes, excelling in your own, and in all ways performing to standards that exceed even the high ones our mother set for you.” She frowned as he chewed on the fries. “Did you not eat?”

“I did. A Big Papi burger and a Fiscal Cliff. But you can never have enough sweet potato fries.”

“I have a finite amount of my own from which you are stealing. But I shall not complain because this was very kind of you.”

Matt chewed and studied her. “Are you okay?”

“Why do you ask?”

“No contractions. When you’re stressed out, they disappear.”

“I know. But most days I do not care to use them. If it is an effort, then I do not push.”

“Okay. I get it.” He chewed for a minute. “I heard your presentation went well. Did your friends like it?”

“It went marvelously. My friend Dallas took me aside to share quite the flow of compliments.”

“That’s great, Celeste.” He was downing half her iced tea.

“And then I bitch slapped her.”

Matt choked on the drink and desperately tried to clear his airway. “I’m sorry. You did what?”

She cocked her head. “I bitch slapped her.”

“That… that can’t be right,” he sputtered. “I mean, I hope it’s not.”

“I slapped my hand against her hand. Up in the air.” She looked at Matt blankly. “Is that not the right term?”

“Thank God, no, it’s not. I think you mean a high-five.”

“If you say so. Well, either way, it happened. You know I have trouble with colloquialisms, so I resent your shocked reaction.”

“I do know that about you, and I apologize.”

“Since we are on the subject, there is something else I would like for you to clarify.”

“Shoot.”

“What is meant by ‘nut bag’? Is that a testicular reference or merely the identification of a satchel of cashews or pecans?”

Matt groaned. “This conversation has gotten really weird. Could we just talk about— Wait a minute. Why are you asking me this? Did someone say that to you?” He looked angry.

Celeste picked at her fry. “No. Certainly not. I heard the term and had a natural curiosity.”

“Okay then…” Her brother crumpled up the paper bag and then smoothed it out in his hands. Then crumpled it again. “It’s the same as ‘nuts.’ You know, crazy.”

“Thank you for the definition.” She took the last bite of her burger and wiped her hands on one of the paper napkins. It shouldn’t matter what her classmates thought of her. Celeste would just be strong about this. She would move on.

My (Current) Top Ten Fictional Boyfriends

tumblr_mfs2mzl3js1qii628o1_500

Bookwhoredom isn’t easy but someone’s got to do it. How could I live up to my name if I didn’t have a series of book boys I’m swooning over all at once. Here’s a list of fictional boyfriends I’m currently obsessed with…they aren’t long winded descriptions of the book just blurbs describing my undying devotion to these fab men! Christian Grey isn’t on this list BUT this is a CURRENT list…I will undeniably find my way back to him! LOL.

10. Jessie Ward – This Man Trilogy (Jodi Ellen Malpas)

Talk about swoon worthy alpha males. I love love love Jessie Ward he is my number 10 pick…I know, I know #10 seems far off but he was a bit too possessive for my liking. I love him but let’s face it he had some batshit crazy moments. HA!

This Man  |  Beneath This Man  |  This Man Confessed

9. Tristan Michaels – Finding Love’s Wings (Zoey Derrick)

Hot movie star…um need I say more? Oh wait, Hot tattooed (and pierced) movie star! Yes, please! ::Fans self:: excuse me while I swoon some more. Tristan Michaels is just hot! Lock me away in a hotel room on a remote island with him any day!  Must read book with a must have book boyfriend!

Finding Love’s Wings

8. Matt Watkins – Flat Out Love (Jessica Park)

Witty, lovable Matt. One of my must read picks is Flat-Out Love and I swear this guy had me swooning from the start. Nerdy and adventurous what a combo.  He’s  the ultimate book boyfriend.

Flat-Out Love  |  Flat-Out Matt

7.  Ryan Christensen – The Love Series (Tina Reber)

Another movie star! Hello…notice a pattern…I’m kind of digging the rockstar/movie star romance. Hollywood IT man Ryan Christensen is hot let’s face it, the man is sex on a stick but he doesn’t want all the glitz and glamour. He wants the girl…loyal, humble and absolutely swoon worthy…what’s not to love?

Love Unscripted  |  Love Unrehearsed

6. Kellan Kyle – Thoughtless Trilogy (S.C. Stephens)

ROCKSTAR Romance! Who doesn’t love them? Kellan Kyle you had me swooning from the beginning and I am still reeling from that experience. I would’ve dropped my man for you too…ok maybe not, but I’d consider it! hehe 😀

Thoughtless  |  Effortless  |  Reckless

5.  Andrew Parrish – The Edge of Never (J.A. Redmerski)

I love, love, love Andrew Parrish. If I had to take a road trip across the country with a random stranger…he’d be my guy! Seriously though, what’s not to love…he is smoldering hot and sweet as candy.  This is the guy you take to bed that will NEVER disappoint, the one you introduce to your parents and marry! The one you want to spend every waking moment with because he’s so flipping perfect! Oh and did I mention he’s also tattooed…I think I’m in heaven! Someone pinch me!

The Edge of Never  |  The Edge of Always

4. David Ferris – Lick (Stage Dive #1)  (Kylie Scott)

Oh dear God, lock me in a room with David Ferris. Accidentally marry me off to him…I promise I’ll never leave! Another ROCKSTAR romance to die for. Hot is not the word for David Ferris…jeez the things I’ve mentally done with him! HA!

Lick (Stage Dive #1)

3. Dean Holder – Hopeless/Losing Hope & Will Cooper – Slammed Trilogy (Colleen Hoover)

Need I say more.

Colleen Hoover creates amazing characters who you fall in love with regardless of gender but Holder, sigh, Holder is something special. And I had to include Will from the Slammed trilogy because, well, I just love him, but since I wanted to be fair to other authors I love. CoHo gets a pass and you get a two-for! Lol.

Hopeless  |  Losing Hope

Slammed  | Point of Retreat  |  This Girl

2. Rush Finlay – Too Far Series (Abbi Glines)

Rush, I love you. Marry me! The End.

Fallen Too Far  |  Never Too Far  |  Forever Too Far

1. Fitzwilliam Darcy – Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen)

Need I say more? Classic and timeless! My all time favorite book boyfriend. He will always be #1. I’d give up my bookwhoring for him. LOL.  Mr. Darcy, the elusive Mr. Darcy. I love this book I’ve read it more time than I’m willing to admit and have watched every movie, series or show based on the book. My all time favorite Darcy portrayal is Colin Firth! Best adaptation I’ve seen! And guess what, I might leave my man for Darcy…in fact, I think I have. Quite a few times…while he was present…but shhhhhh don’t tell him!

Pride and Prejudice – there are no excuses for not reading this book, the download is FREE!!!

If you haven’t read any of the books I highly recommend them. Not just because they’re awesome but because the “eye candy,” come on folks you’re readers use your imagination. Seriously though, check these books out. You won’t be disappointed!

Left Drowning Book Review

17325147

“What does it take to rise from life’s depths, swim against the current, and breathe? Weighted down by the loss of her parents, Blythe McGuire struggles to keep her head above water as she trudges through her last year at Matthews College. Then a chance meeting sends Blythe crashing into something she doesn’t expect—an undeniable attraction to a dark-haired senior named Chris Shepherd, whose past may be even more complicated than her own. As their relationship deepens, Chris pulls Blythe out of the stupor she’s been in since the night a fire took half her family. She begins to heal, and even, haltingly, to love this guy who helps her find new paths to pleasure and self-discovery. But as Blythe moves into calmer waters, she realizes Chris is the one still strangled by his family’s traumatic history. As dark currents threaten to pull him under, Blythe may be the only person who can keep him from drowning.”
*This book is intended for mature audiences due to strong language and sexual content.

I finally read my ARC yesterday and I definitely put my entire life on hold just to finish this book. I COULD NOT put it down. It was 100% worth it! I walked to the store, I was reading, I went to the mall, I was reading, I ate lunch, I was reading…..I COULD NOT stop. I read so much my kindle and iphone batteries died. I finally put the book down at about 88% because I was afraid to finish. I wasn’t sure I was ready for it to be over. I wanted to live in that world for just a bit longer.

Favorite characters:
I really honestly and truly loved them all. Jessica Park has a way of making you love her characters as though they are your extended family. She managed it again with Left Drowning but I must say my three favorite people were Sabin, Christopher and of course Blythe.
Sabin, Sabin, Sabin oh how I loved Sabin! If I could wrap him up and put him on display for all the world to see, I would. He was one of my favorites. Ok, I think he is my favorite as much as I loved Blythe and Christopher, there was just something so special about Sabin. He held everyone together even when they wanted to fall apart. He had his issues but he loved fiercely. He was the funny, animated one that made everyone crazy but he was also their glue.
Chris, as much as I loved him I wanted to strangle him…and often. He broke my heart…repeatedly dragging it through the mud and stomping on it until I was sure it wouldn’t beat again. But somehow, I still rooted for him! What a past he ran from. His running caused me great pains but I understood. I really did. Chris was intense and ridiculously patient even when he was boiling inside. There was something very noble about that but again I had my moments where I wanted to ring his neck.
Blythe…what a journey she had! I admired the woman she became even through all the pain she persevered. She was a shell of a person when the book began. She’s alive but not really living…inside she’s unfeeling, cold and completely void of emotion. By the end of the book she came out of her shell, opened up, accepted the many faults and losses she’s incurred. Finally, she thought, she felt, she loved. She was truly an inspiration. I rooted for her from start to finish.
This was an amazingly beautiful book. I went through a plethora of emotions while reading it. I laughed, I cried, I was heartbroken, enraged and somehow I continued to root for a HEA!!! What I loved the most about this book were the relationships. The love story is only one aspect of this book. One tragically beautiful aspect, but there is a camaraderie that is seen throughout this book that simply amazed me. I wanted to be a part of this unconventional family. Through their troubled pasts they all hold onto one another for the strength to continue…to continue breathing in a world where they “were left drowning.”  Their fights are deeply emotional, as their battle scars run deeper than merely the physical. They’re all seeking a way to somehow just breathe again. Even through the pain they’d all experienced they made the best of what they had…each other!
Here is one of my favorite parts…
Blythe.”
Chris looks around the room as if trying to find a way to convince me.
He thinks for a minute. “Your parents died. Your world fell apart.”
I nod.
He puts his hand on my cheek.
“You were left drowning.”
I nod again.
“And you’re struggling to breathe.”
I am. It’s a constant struggle to stay near the surface. I have just enough air to stop me from totally going under, but not enough to thrive.
“So do it. Breathe. Just breathe.”
This is part of what makes Jessica Park’s writing so wonderful. I connected with these characters, each and every one of them. I truly connected with them. I wanted things to work out for them. I laughed at their joys, cried during their sorrows, and felt how much love they had for one another. I was angry when they were and I wanted so very much for things to work out in their favor. This book was an incredible journey that I urge you all to take. You won’t be sorry!

Left Drowning by Jessica Park (July 16, 2013)

Jessica Park has quickly become one of my preferred authors to read. She’s amazingly witty and I am so in love with Flat-Out Love and more recently Flat-Out Matt….really I’m just in love with Matt but the books were amazing. This story sounds achingly beautiful. I have an ARC that I meant to start this weekend but unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to! I plan on reading it this week…I have no doubt I will be blown away!
